Common Vehicle Repair and Maintenance Questions

Check engine

Why is my Check Engine Light on?

Your Check Engine Light can be caused by anything from a loose gas cap to something much more serious. Generally speaking, what that light means is your engine isn’t running at its optimum performance level. While the issue could be something small it could just as easily be a major problem with your vehicle’s engine. When in doubt, don’t be afraid to have your car checked out by a trusted professional mechanic.

Alternator

What is an Alternator and Why is it Important?

You’ve heard the word but aren’t sure what it does - that’s common. The alternator is an important part of your vehicle, but it doesn’t get the respect it deserves. Your alternator works together with your battery to create electricity that powers all the electric components in your vehicle. Considering how much technology is packed into modern cars, trucks, vans, and SUVs, it’s obvious why the alternator is so important.

oil

Do I Need an Oil Change?

There are a few signs to look for when you’re in need of an oil change. New oil is a light brown/honey colour; if your oil looks black and opaque, it could be old and in need of replacement. Also, if your engine is running louder than normal, that could be another sign your oil needs to be changed. Remember that Check Engine Light? Well if you haven’t changed your oil in a long time, that light could come on to notify you of sub-par engine performance.

Why do Winter Tires Matter?

They may look similar to all-season tires, but winter tires are very different. Regular all-season and summer tires tend to start losing their effectiveness when the temperature drops below 7 degrees Celsius. Winter tires are made of compounds that grip ice and asphalt at temperatures well below zero. In Canada, Winter tires are a must.
